Suley Ali Muntari, a former Ghanaian midfielder, has described the misunderstanding that occurred between him and Asamoah Gyan regarding the Black Stars captaincy during Kwasi Appiah’s reign, emphasising that there was no animosity despite the mistake.

The problem began in 2012 when Muntari suffered an injury while playing for AC Milan.

He claimed that after he recovered, the club told him not to take the chance of going back too soon. Appiah notified him about a temporary shift in leadership during that time.

“They wanted me to stay after I recovered from my injury with Milan.” Appiah called me and informed me that Asa would captain because I couldn’t be there and that I would take over as captain when I got back,” Muntari told 3Sports.

Muntari captained Ghana in two games after rejoining the national squad, including one in Kumasi against Lesotho.

But during another assignment, things took a surprising turn.

“I captained both the Kumasi encounter against Lesotho and another game. Asamoah was given the captaincy when we travelled to Sudan, and I objected, saying, “No, I should be the captain,” he remarked.

Muntari disclosed that in order to resolve the matter, he went straight to Gyan.

“Asa, I’m supposed to be the captain, not you,” I said as I entered his room. I know that Baffour deserves the captaincy, so I wouldn’t accept it if he were present. Here, it is the same thing. “I went there and they made me sign everything,” he claimed, “and I said, ‘Okay’,” Muntari disclosed.

Sulley Muntari stressed that he had no personal issues with Asamoah Gyan in spite of the misunderstanding.
