Okyere Baafi claims that the caucus has not discussed or shown any signs of such an agenda.

He emphasised that there is no attempt on the part of any individual to weaken or replace the Effutu MP and that the minority in Parliament is still cohesive and working together.

Okyere Baafi stated in a January 14, 2026, interview on Wontumi TV that he does not think anyone is now plotting to remove Afenyo-Markin from his post.

“Even though no position in Parliament is permanent, I don’t think anyone wants to remove Afenyo-Markin for the time being,” he stated.

“The party may choose to replace him at any point, but as of right now, I don’t know of anyone plotting or vying for his seat. There is no hostility among us.

He also rejected allegations of internal strife, calling them baseless.

He emphasised that the caucus is still focused on its shared obligations by saying, “For now, I don’t foresee anything like that happening.”

His remarks come after Kennedy Agyapong, the flagbearer candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), claimed to have urged the Minority Leader to resign.

Agyapong claims that some members of the party are aggressively pursuing the role of minority leader for the Effutu Member of Parliament.

He claimed to have counselled the Minority Leader to step down and make room for those who are opposing him.

Agyapong went on to say that Afenyo-Markin does not need to hold onto the parliamentary job because it is financially stable.

He declared, “He should leave the position for those who are fighting him because he is well-to-do.”

In an interview with UTV on December 15, 2025, Agyapong asserted that internal power struggles within the party are the reason behind critiques of Afenyo-Markin’s leadership style.

“Those who criticise Alexander Afenyo-Markin’s leadership seek posts; others contend that the Minority Leader ought to be from the Ashanti or Eastern regions. I have personally called him to request that he resign from the post and have instructed him to do so on their behalf.

He went on to say that he purposefully avoided naming the people vying for the job.

“I would have listed the names of everyone vying for his post if it had been in the past, but I won’t today. Agyapong said, “It shouldn’t seem like being an MP is the only way to survive; he can eat for the rest of his life.”

Many people, including Solomon Owusu, a top communicator for the Movement for Change, have criticised Afenyo-Markin’s leadership style.

Owusu said, “It is not surprising the NPP keeps collapsing if it has a weak leader like Afenyo-Markin.”
