The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has sold approximately US$125 million to commercial banks in its maiden foreign-exchange auction under its new spot FX sales and intermediation framework.

The auction forms part of GoldBod’s effort to provide commercial banks with more predictable and transparent access to US dollars through its GoldBod GoFX platform.
Why the GoldBod FX auction matters
Foreign-exchange availability is important to Ghanaian businesses that need dollars to pay for imports, settle international obligations or support other transactions. A more structured supply mechanism can help improve transparency in the market.
GoldBod has announced plans to sell up to US$1 billion to commercial banks during October as part of a broader programme expected to generate about US$1.5 billion in foreign exchange.
How the new framework works
Under the framework, GoldBod ordinarily conducts spot FX sales twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Participating banks submit requests during designated sales windows.
Where demand exceeds the available FX tranche, allocations are made on a pro-rata basis. The framework is intended to improve fairness and reduce uncertainty in access to the available foreign exchange.
Potential impact on businesses
Businesses that depend on imported goods or foreign currency payments will be watching how the new system affects access to dollars and exchange-rate conditions. Greater predictability can assist companies with planning and pricing, although the wider currency market remains influenced by many factors.
The programme also forms part of broader efforts to strengthen Ghana’s foreign-exchange reserves and support stability in the FX market.
What investors and businesses should watch
The next auctions, allocation levels, demand from banks and the broader direction of the cedi will provide important indicators of how the programme is working.
MyGHPages will continue to follow GoldBod, banking, foreign exchange and other major developments affecting Ghana’s business community.
